WorldbuildingEX
Jan. 19th, 2018 11:47 am Hello there, writer, I hope you're excited for this too! Now, most of my requests for this exchange can simply be explained with 'because video games', but where's the fun in that? We're here for the world building! I love geeky stuff like this, so I'm simple to please.
Some elaboration on my Do Not Want list:
Anything sexual - I have no interest in it. Romance is fine, though, especially if it develops the characters involved.
Excessive gore or violence - I have some tolerance to violence since all my requests are for video games, but please keep it to canon-typical violence.
Drug use or abuse taken lightly or comically - I don't mind this subject taken seriously. I do mind it used for comedy or without consequences.
As for things I like, especially about world building, I love attention to detail. Taking one small thing and then elaborating it into its own thing, like taking the details of an NPC's house and reasoning out what their life is like from there, is something I both love reading and writing about. I also love a glimpse into ordinary lives in extraordinary worlds. A lot of games are about the hero's big quest to save the world or something, but what about the nameless people who have to endure monsters out in the countryside or malicious architecture in their everyday lives? Or even the mundane realities of a hero's quest. Humanizing a video game hero, especially the silent ones, is great too.
I'll list what games I've played, but I'm fine with stories written for games I haven't played in these series.
About the specific requests:
Legend of Zelda
Games I've played in this series - Actually, it's quicker to list what I haven't played: Minish Cap, Skyward Sword, and Breath of the Wild.
My requests on this are varied; this is one of my favorite game series overall, so there's many little aspects to them that I'm curious about. I love the idea of using music as magic, and it's been in there since the first game if you count the warp whistle. Is it an easier means of magic if you already know how to play an instrument? Songs usually don't take MP here, but they can have significant effects on the world. And cuccos... what is the deal with cuccos? They're clearly a vital resource to humans just like chickens, but then you have huge cuccos, golden cuccos, and of course the infamous cucco swarm attack.
I also picked out two particular places, Koholint Island and the Lost Woods. As I noted on the sign-up sheet, the Koholint Island request is about Link's Awakening. Anything about the island of Link's Awakening, it's one of my favorites. When it comes to the Lost Woods, I mostly think of the original screen in the first game. But any incarnation of the Lost Woods is fine by me, even if it's in one of the games I've not played.
Tomba!
This is my longshot request; it'd be really nice to see something about this game. I've only played the first one, though. It's still a charming little game that's fun to play. But there's a lot of crazy stuff going on. The plot of the game is that a gold bracelet once owned by Tomba's grandpa was stolen by evil pigs that covet golden things. He goes out to get it back, but has to deal with the powerful curses the pigs have put over the land. And he does that by collecting 'evil pig bags' and throwing the evil pigs in them. So yeah, I'd like to see some theories about all that. I also put in one of the plot-required quests: you have to learn the dwarven language early on and you do that by having Tomba jump on the heads of unsuspecting dwarves and bite them. And it works! Why?
Sonic the Hedgehog
Games I've played: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Pinball, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Heroes.
Hoo boy, a lot of 'because video games' things here because there's loads of situations that just don't make sense. Why build highways that have loops in them? And springs, ramps, crushers, and other things that would make it difficult to drive on. From SA2, City Escape and Radical Highway are good examples of what I mean. Then giant pinball tables, or mazes like all of Sonic Pinball. What's the point of them? And why are there small animals trapped in Eggman's robots in the earlier games?
On a related note, what about those giant airship fleets Eggman keeps building? Sonic and his friends keep wrecking them, including the powerhouse that is Death Egg. What does it take to afford and maintain such war fleets? And be able to hide them so perfectly. Dr. Eggman is extremely dangerous when you think about it.
Super Mario Bros.
Games I've played: SMB 1, 2 (American NES release), and 3, Superstar Saga, Bowser's Inside Story, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Luigi's Mansion (both), Dr. Mario, Yoshi's Cookie (it counts!)
The requests I have for this series are mostly connected to particular games, though I'm still fine with using other games where the subjects come up.
From Superstar Saga- Distinctive Jumping and Significance of a Good Mustache. I'm pretty sure this isn't the only game where the Mario bros use jumping to prove who they are. And in other games, there is a difference in jumping between various characters. It could be interesting to examine the importance of jumping in this world. As for the mustache, it counts as a luck/charisma stat in this game, which is a nifty thing. It's also something non-human characters in various games will praise (or hit on) Mario for, making it a funny little social detail too.
From Paper Mario TTYD: Bob-omb culture. Bob-ombs are in many games, but I really liked their village, interactions, and dialogue in this game. It'd be fun to see more of what life is like for a being that explodes itself from time to time.
From the NES games: Minus World. I love watching the skills of speedrunners and all the crazy glitches they exploit. It'd be interesting to see that kind of thing put into fanfiction form, and Minus World would be a good place to start from.
Happy writing! :)
